Talk Money
Talk Money is a financial literacy project from ootiboo helping primary school students explore how money works in everyday life through fun, hands-on workshops.
Building on the continued success of our Why Money Matters workshops, also inspired by a book by Deborah Meaden, we have once again partnered with children’s publisher Farshore to deliver financial learning workshops for Year 6 students. Over the course of a 90-minute session, students explore the difference between wants and needs, practise budgeting by making spending decisions for a fictitious business, and reflect on the relationship between money and happiness.
Wants vs Needs
In groups, students rank everyday items from "need" to "want", discussing which are essential and which are luxuries. The activity encourages reasoning, listening, and collaborative decision-making.
Business decisions
In the main activity, students become entrepreneurs, building their own product-based businesses within a set budget. Using business packs with costed options for materials, packaging, marketing, staff and salaries, teams make strategic decisions to balance quality and affordability. A wildcard round adds real-life unpredictability, and the session ends with reflection on budgeting, compromise, and adaptability: valuable skills for both business and personal finance.
Value to schools
The ootiboo team have delivered several Talk Money workshops. Our workshop lead, Chris Green, is an ex-primary headteacher who understands exactly how to engage students and deliver learning effectively in schools. Fully funded workshops are available free to primary schools in London, Kent, Essex, Surrey and Sussex. Schools in these areas and beyond can also book a paid-for option if funded workshops are unavailable and want a guaranteed place. All sessions are delivered in-person and come fully resourced.
